Winaukee is directed by Bart Sobel and Jeff "Freedo" Freedman, both of whom have a long history in camping and a passion for working with children. Bart Sobel Bart Sobel continues a family tradition established in 1934 by his father "Doc" Sobel. Bart grew up at Winaukee as a camper and staff member. In 1981, he succeeded his father as a year-round director of Camp Winaukee. Previously, Bart was a Professor of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in educational philosophy. Jeff Freedman, known affectionately as "Freedo", directs the Island Camp and is responsible for staff recruitment. Freedo was a longtime camper at Winaukee and received the "All Around Camper Award" in 1979. He was a collegiate NCAA All-American athlete. Before joining the Winaukee team in 1999 "Freedo" worked as a lawyer for the NCAA. |
